How WPM is calculated

A "word" in typing is counted as five characters, including spaces, so that long and short words even out.

• Gross WPM = characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes
• Net WPM = (characters − uncorrected mistakes) ÷ 5 ÷ minutes
• Accuracy = (characters − uncorrected mistakes) ÷ characters

For example, 250 characters in one minute with 5 mistakes left in is 50 gross WPM, 49 net WPM and 98% accuracy.

Typing tests do not all count mistakes the same way, so your score can differ a little between sites. The important thing is to compare your own results over time on one test.
